| What’s
the attraction? |
| Probably
the location, no other village in the southern highlands
can lay claim to a more historic and picturesque backdrop
in which to celebrate this day in our nations calendar
of public holidays. |
| Colin
Gelling the organiser of the annual celebrations said
he has seen the numbers grow every year as Australians
who are normally pretty laid back about demonstrating
their pride and national identity has grown. |
| With
over 60-market stalls local and interstate and entertainment
for all the family grand parades vintage cars, fire engine
displays, fresh produce markets, face painting there is
something for every one. |
| The
atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with
a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in
for good measure. |
| The
official part of the day ... |
| The
official part of the day starts at the Historic Berrima
Court House Museum at 9.30 am where young citizen and
citizen of the year awards are given by the mayor of the
shire. This is followed by an address by the Australia
day ambassador then its tea and damper for all. |
|
After the awards ceremony its then off to enjoy the
rest of the day to hunt for that elusive piece of craft
either in the market square in the more traditional
shops in Berrima. |
|
This year the organiser welcomed the return of the Corrective
Services Band as a part of the grand parade and ongoing
shows through the day. Entertainment was all day non-stop
except for the now famous grand parade (featuring thirteen
fire brigade tankers) starting at the Berrima Public school
12pm and winding its way down the old Hume Highway finishing
in Jellore St. |
